Effective organisational response to Stress

Over 11 million days are lost at work a year because of stress at work. Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by doing a risk assessment and acting on it.

At Blue Light Trauma Services, we work together with you to help reduce the impact of stress in the workplace. We work with the HSE principles of

  • Role
  • Demands
  • Relationships
  • Support
  • Control
  • Change

We can work with organisations to develop the following

  • Stress Policy
  • Risk Assessments
  • Guidance for managers and staff
  • The role of occupational health in reducing stress
  • Team stress surveys
  • Training for managers on how to have supportive conversations with staff
Stress Policy
Does your organisation have a policy regarding dealing with stress? When was the last time it was reviewed or updated? Does it meet latest HSE guidance?
Lets us work with you to develop a stress policy or review your current one to ensure to meets current practice. We can build in other services such as individual stress risk assessments or team stress surveys as part of the plan, just contact us for further details

Individual Stress Risk Assessment

HSE state ‘Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by doing a risk assessment and acting on it.
If you have fewer than five employees you don’t have to write anything down. But it is useful to do this, so you can review it later, for example if something changes. If you have five or more employees, you are required by law to write the risk assessment down.’

An individual stress risk assessment is a working document between an employee and their manager looking at issues they may be experiencing in the workplace and exploring what can be put in place to reduce this. We find this can be an effective way of proactive communication between employer and employee in addressing issues within the workplace.
We can provide template documents including guidance and  training for managers for you to use within the organisation.

Team Stress Surveys
Often in organisations we notice trends in sickness absence or stress related referrals to occupational health in specific departments, however we don’t often know why.
We provide and facilitate team stress surveys which are developed by HSE. Suitable for teams of 10 or over we ask the individuals to complete an anonymous questionnaire looking at the 6 areas of stress in the workplace.
Following this we can come into the organisation with the team to undertake a facilitated supported feedback session to better understand show those stressors are impacting people and empowers them to come up with SMART ways of addressing these concerns. We have found the more included in the process a team is the better they respond to dealing with larger team affect stress issues.
We can also provide an action plan moving forward for managers and HR to focus on when looking to initiate change within that team to reduce stressors.
